I‘m back after too long away with a new challenge in “My Life as a Lion”. But first I’d better bring you all up to date.
When I last posted I was approaching the end of my year as District Governor. I started June with the last of my runs for my wife’s charity, 8.5 miles Great Midlands Fun Run, and ended it with a fantastic trip by rail and road from Seattle to Denver, via Yellowstone, and on to Toronto for Lions Clubs International Convention. My year as District Governor ended when I handed over the chain of office to incoming DG, Ian Haffner.
Since then I have kept myself busy as chairman of the host committee for the national convention in Birmingham in May, served as Communications Chairman for my district and as Community Chairman for my club. I also helped out when Birmingham hosted Europa Forum, a gathering of Lions from throughout Europe, chairing two of the seminars. Last but not least, I have been appointed as deputy to the chairman of a committee to promote the 1-2-4 project.
The 1-2-4 project is a partnership between Lions in the British Isles and Ireland, the Loomba Foundation and the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). There are 100 million widows living in poverty in the world and the project provides impoverished widows with a sewing machine and training at a cost of £50. The 1-2-4 is because for every £50 raised by Lions the Loomba Foundation will match it and LCIF will then match the combined total turning £50 into £200 or 1 sewing machine into 4. And so to the new challenge. At the end of January the 13 Lions who will be District Governors next year elected me to be their chairman for 2015-16. This is a great honour and I am really looking forward to the next seventeen months or so. In layman’s terms, although not totally analogous, I will effectively be the chief executive of Lions Clubs International for The British Isles and Ireland from July 2015 until June 2016. This is going to be a busy but exciting year so expect many more posts as the journey continues
