Lions, in common with other organisations, have a lot of words, phrases and acronyms that have particular meanings in a Lions context. Although I have tried to avoid too much of this and explained terms where I can, I have probably missed quite a lot so here is a list to help you. Cabinet – The administrative body of a district. Cabinet meets four times a year and is chaired by the District Governor
Chairman of Council – Appointed by the Council of Governors from a candidate list drawn from previous District Governors to chair Council meetings
Conventions – Annual meetings held at district, multiple district and international levels, clubs can send 1 voting delegate per 10 members although any lion is welcome to attend and speak.
Council of Governors – The governing body for a Multiple District comprising the District Governor of each district and the Chairman of Council
District – A collection of clubs for administrative reasons. In GB and Ireland there are currently 13 districts.
District Governor – The administrative leader of a district
District Officer – A member of cabinet appointed by the District Governor for a one year term (Vice District Governors are elected as are some Zone Chairmen if nominated by a club)
Lions Club – A group of like-minded individuals formed to provide service to their local community, usually a town or village, as well as wider service as part of Lions Clubs International.
Lions Clubs International (LCI) – The over arching organisation for Lions Clubs around the world
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) – The charitable arm of Lions Clubs International. Awards grants to local Lions Clubs for humanitarian aid and major projects that clubs could not manage on their own.
Lions Eye Health Programme (LEHP) – One of the Multiple District‘s signature projects. Aims to encourage early detection and timely treatment of diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the appropriate treatment of low vision through regular eye tests. Also to educate people at risk of these conditions and increase general awareness of eye health organisations.

Multiple District – A collection of districts for administration purposes usually a country or state. GB and Ireland make up a single Multiple District (MD-105)
Region – An adminstrative grouping of clubs within a district. 105M has three regions, each having three zones within it.
Signature Projects – Two projects being promoted by the Multiple District to help provide a national identity for Lions in GB and Ireland. The two projects are Lions Eye Health Programme and Young Leaders in Service.
Young Ambassadors – A youth competition run at District, Multiple District and European levels aimed at finding and rewarding a young person who provides service to their community or wider
Young Leaders in Service (YLIS) – One of the Multiple District‘s signature projects which aims to encourage young people to get involved in community service by offering awards for 50 or 100 plus hours of service in a 12 month period.
Zone –An adminstrative grouping of clubs within a region
