“Ordinary people doing amazing things”
The usual answer to the question starts with the organisation, Lions Clubs International, and works down but I think it’s better to start with the slogan above.
My experience of Lions is based on Clubs in the UK and here Lions is several groups of like minded people who want to put something back into the community where they live. Lions Clubs serve their town or village through a wide range of fund raising and service activities supporting the elderly, the young, the disadvantaged and the needy.
Throughout the UK and Ireland this is repeated in around 900 different towns and villages so you’re never far from a Lions Club. You can find a club near you at the UK & Ireland Lions website or by telephoning 0845 833 9502.
Lions are bigger than this though. There are Lions Clubs in over 200 different countries all governed by the same code of ethics and purposes as each other. Lions Clubs International is the only Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) with an office at the United Nations.
While Lions do amazing things at Club level it is being part of this worldwide organisation that makes them remarkable. Two campaigns to help eliminate curable blindness raised over $300 Million and the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is able to respond quickly to natural disasters by sending money to the local Club.
More information can be found at www.lionsclubs.org.
Finally, one other thing that makes Lions remarkable is the fact that they pay for the administration of the organisation at all levels out of their own pockets. This means that all donations to Lions and all proceeds of their fund raising are used to fund their service activities or to support other charitable causes.
