Once again I must apologise for the gap between blogs. Having got out of the habit whilst on holiday it’s been a bit of a struggle getting back into the swing of things.

Last time I signed off just before attending Shakespeare Lions’ charter anniversary dinner. It was a great evening and started well by introducing a new power of the lions’ badge. All guests were given a printed lions’ logo which entitled the bearer to a pint of ale from the bar.

Well, it’s been a while since my last post as I have been in Kos for my youngest daughter’s wedding without any internet access.

On my return last Friday I had to pick up the organisation of my Club’s 34th Charter Anniversary Dinner which took place on Saturday night. Fortunately club members Heather and Lin had done most of the work while I was away and I was just left with creating and printing the menus and sourcing the top table gifts. I also had to finish writing a song for the president and preparing for Autumn Forum on the Sunday. More on both of those later.

Firstly let me apologise for the delay in posting this edition of my blog. I seem to have been busier than ever and a bout of man flu didn’t help. In my last post I told you all about the first training weekend for me and my fellow second Vice District Governors. So what have I been up to since then?

…and what a team it’s going to be.

This past weekend was the first opportunity for this year’s 2nd Vice District Governors to meet each other. This was at a two-day training event organised by the Multiple District at the St John’s Hotel in Solihull. There are 13 districts in MD 105 but two of them, 105A and 105NE do not yet have 2nd VDGs. Three of this year’s team were not able to make this weekend and the rest of us look forward to meeting Mike from 105SE, Marianne from 105SW and John from 105W at an early opportunity. So that left eight of us and our partners

  • Liz and Roy from 105 BN
  • David and Christine from 105BS
  • John and Joan from 105C
  • David and Diana from 105D
  • John and Pam from 105E
  • Paul and Mandy from 105EA
  • Pauric from 105I
  • Me and Christine from 105M

An overview of the geographic location of the districts within the British Isles and Ireland can be found on the MD website

Following the cabinet meeting discussed in my last post, my next meeting was the first of the organising committee for 2012’s Multiple District Convention. Every year Lions hold conventions at three different levels, District, Multiple District and International. These conventions are attended by delegates from clubs. At district level these delegates vote on various resolutions affecting the district and elect the district governor and two vice district governors for the forthcoming year. The multiple district convention is a similar affair but larger and the international convention is larger still and delegates elect the international president and vices.

Lions at District level are looked after by the district cabinet. This is a collection of committees covering both administration and the promotion of and assistance with the large number of Lions’ projects. The cabinet meetings are held four times a year and are chaired by the District Governor. An overview of the structure can be seen at www.lions105m.org.uk/cabinet.htm

Monday 8th August was a day off from Lions, apart from circulating a few mails around the district. On Tuesday evening, however, I went to my club’s fund raising committee meeting.

… what’s it going to be like if and when I’m District Governor?

Following the relative calm of July, August is proving to be a busy month. After the district changeover which I talked about in my last post I attended Zone H’s first Zone meeting of the year on 27th July accompanied by district water projects officer Pauline.

The "gongs"

Sunday 24th July was the date for the District Changeover for my district, 105M. This is the event where we welcome our new District Governor and receive our various badges and chains of office as incoming district officers. For me it is the official start of my three-year journey which will, hopefully take me to District Governor for 2013-14.

Changeover and Charter

Sorry once again for the gap between posts but my working life is interfering with my life as a lion.

Changeover

Changeover Barbecue

Last week started with Marston Green and District Lions’ changeover barbecue. This is the time when the outgoing president hands over to the new one. Only one problem this time, the outgoing president, Brian, was ill with a stomach upset and unable to attend. The formal handover will take place at our next club meeting but in the meantime the rest of us enjoyed good food and fellowship and welcomed new president, Tim, to the role.
