Merry Christmas

adventOh dear  where has the time gone. I promised you a post in October about Autumn Forum and suddenly it’s almost Christmas Day and apart from a plug for the district advent calendar I’ve not managed to post anything.

So much has happened since the last post that the best thing to do to catch up is to read my newsletters for November and December. In the meantime here are the highlights.

Calendar. Visit our advent calendar to find out more about the great work Lions do all over the world

It has been too long since my last post since when I have carried out six more club visits to Sandwell, Castle Bromwich, Wellingborough, Stour Valley, Birmingham Moseley & Kings Heath and Shakespeare Lions Clubs. I have completed a 5K run attended three more Charter Anniversary Dinners at Bilston & Willenhall, Northampton 80 and my own club Marston Green. I’ve been to an Antiques quiz run by Alcester Lions and another quiz run by Birmingham Chinatown Lions. I’ve also started planning convention with my District Secretary Pauline. Yesterday was our district Autumn Forum and I’ll give a full report on that in my next blog.

130811 - Cabinet - 1st - 011 - IMG_0349130811 - Cabinet - 1st - 018 - IMG_0356Once again I have been struggling to keep this blog up to date although August has been very much a family month for me with a family reunion weekend, my nephew’s wedding and a trip to Scotland to visit relatives. Lions is never far away, however, and August has seen my first cabinet meeting as DG as well as the first batch of club visits.

This is very much a catch up post to bring you up to date with my activities since returning from Hamburg. Once I was back it was straight into action with my Club’s business meeting on the night I returned. A good first meeting for new president Geoff.

2013-07-13 10.30.56After two days back at work, the weekend brought more lions activities with my club’s attendance at Shirley Carnival on the Saturday. Last year the event got rained off and had to be restaged in September. This year it was fine and very hot which kept people away and reduced our takings. It was nevertheless a fun day and was good to see so many lions clubs represented there.

Inside the O2

Inside the O2

As I continue to write this blog I have more and more admiration for people who are able to write daily blogs or even weekly ones. It’s now nearly two weeks since the end of International Convention and I’ve only just found time to write the third article I promised.

My final convention article is about the convention itself and some of the other events that surround it.

Lions on Parade

Some Texans relaxing in the sun

This will be a short post to tell you a little about the parade at the Lions Clubs International Convention. It’s going to be mainly pictures but first a few details.

The Californian breakfast

The Californian breakfast

The parade takes place on the first day of the convention proper and is a glorious celebration of the diverse organisation that is Lions Clubs International. But I’m getting ahead of myself as the day started for Christine and me with a Californian Breakfast hosted by the Lions of California with our host being the wonderful Margaret, one of my classmates.

Don’t collapse with shock but here’s my second post of the year which will shortly be followed by the third and fourth as I post three articles about Lions Clubs International Convention 2013 in Hamburg, Germany.

The convention experience can be divided into three sections, Training for District Governors Elect, The Parade and The convention itself. This article will consider the three days of training ending with our DGE Banquet on Friday 5th July.

Arriving at the Radission Blu

Christine and I arrived in Hamburg yesterday after a simple one and a half hour flight from Birmingham. We were met at the airport by a well drilled team of local Lions who directed us to a coach which took us to the Radisson Blu Hotel.

After checking into the hotel and meeting up with Liam and Ann on the way in we decided to go for a walk.
