This month or so has had the flavour of membership and leadership with meetings of both the district Global Leadership and Global Membership Teams and a Multiple District Membership and Leadership Summit in the middle.
I have also been finalising the district leadership and membership goal statements for the coming Lions year, editing our district officers’ job descriptions and trying to fill some of the posts on my cabinet.
Filling the cabinet posts is proving as difficult as I assumed it would be with two flat refusals, a couple of polite noes after consideration and a few who are still thinking about it. I have had quite a few yeses as well so it’s not that bad. One of my aims for next year is to make district committees take a more collective view of their activities. To this end I have revised job descriptions moving all the aims and objectives of each post to their respective chairman’s job description to allow allocation of responsibilities and tasks to be made by the chairman in consultation with his or her committee. I am also trying to arrange the district officers’ training in May to include the first meetings of the new committees so that they can develop an action plan for the year and beyond.
Also on the membership and leadership front I attended a two-day summit in Solihull attended by district membership and leadership officers as well as a number of VDGS and DGs. It was a useful opportunity to meet others and discover how much we had in common, and how much we didn’t. Some districts clearly have a long way to go but all seem to have lost the art of increasing membership and finding good leaders.
During February I have also visited five clubs, Sandwell, Lutterworth, Redditch, Kingswinford & Stourbridge and Wellingborough (the latter in March). All of the visits were interesting and served to demonstrate that there are many different ways to run a Lions Club. The highlight for me was Lutterworth where I got to induct a new member. Other highlights of the month included two DG Team meetings, each with a selection of the committee chairmen, starting the My Ideal Club process with one of the clubs in the district and giving some training to some of my club members on how to edit our website.
All of my efforts for the coming month will be directed towards forming a cabinet and getting elected as District Governor for next year at our District Convention in Worcester.
